The idle internet douchebags always manage to zero in on certain people for their ridicule memes. The latest is Tim Tebow, the first sophomore ever to win the Heisman.
Tebow always seems to set people off, whether by writing an autobiography at age 23, or by appearing in pro-life ads, or by telling an interviewer that he's still a virgin, or by being home-schooled, or just by being deeply and publicly religious.
... or by being over-hyped throughout his career, which is genuinely annoying, but not his own fault.
My only problem with Tebow is the way he decided where to play high school football. Essentially he was a pro football player in high school. Since he was home-schooled, Florida rules allowed him to play for any school. He and his family shopped around, then got an apartment in the school district they liked the best - which was in a different county from where they really lived. (And since he was home-schooled, he was inherently exempt from any academic standards that would apply to other athletes. All he had to do for the school was to show up and play football while he got straight As from his mom.) I find that annoying. I've already accepted the fact that college athletics are actually the minor leagues for some major sports, but do we also have to monitor recruiting violations in high school?
But I can't really blame Tebow for that. He was a little kid at the time. The state regulations and Tebow's parents should get the short end of that stick.
Let's be honest. 99% of the people who ridicule this guy would be thrilled to be his dad. This is a kid who was a major star in college during the school year, then spent his summers working in orphanages in the Philippines. Does he deserve to get ridiculed as if he were some shiftless self-important douche like Russell Crowe?
Well, yes, I guess he does, now that I think about it.
But at least I understand the other side of the equation.
