As I type this, 99% of the votes are counted and Romney leads by a mere 4 votes.
Ron Paul finished a very solid third with 21%.
There are 25 delegates available in Iowa. Those three candidates will win 7 each.
Romney and Paul won the urban/suburban areas, but Santorum was extremely strong in all the rural counties.
What accounted for Santorum's strength? Abortion. 13% of the voters said that abortion was the most important issue, and of those 13, seven went to Santorum, only one to Romney. Voters who answered "the budget deficit" went for Ron Paul, while those who answered "the economy" leaned toward Romney.
Ron Paul's support descended substantially as voters got older. Here's his percentage of the vote by age group:
24-: ...... 50%
25-29: ... 45%
30-39: ... 34%
40-49: ... 17%
50-64: ... 15%
65+: ...... 11%
