John Edwards owes U.S. $2.1 million, officials say

In 2011 John Edwards spent nearly a million dollars of his 2008 campaign funds

"Edwards received more than $12.9 million in federal matching funds, the money generated from the $3 box that taxpayers can check on their tax returns. Most of the public money came after he dropped out of the race."
