New Movies In Theaters This Week- Rotten Tomatoes

New Movies In Theaters This Week - Rotten Tomatoes:
There are four new movies this week:

John Carter, 3500 theaters. PG-13 adaptation of a classic Edgar Rice Burroughs adventure set on the planet Mars. 51% positive reviews; a tepid 2.5 stars from Ebert. Box office expectation: second place; $25M.

Silent House, 2100 theaters. R-rated haunted house film starring Elizabeth Olsen. 62% positive reviews, but only 2 stars from Ebert. Box office expectation: 3rd or 4th place; $11M.

A Thousand Words, 1500 theaters. Eddie Murphy in yet another Norbit-style flop, this time as a literary agent. If you could quantify the record somehow, Eddie would probably hold the record for the worst results from the most talent. Rated PG-13, it's the weakest film of the week in the eyes of the critics: 0% positive reviews and a harsh 1.5 stars from Ebert. Box office expectation: somewhere between 6th and 10th; about $4M.

Friends With Kids, 375 theaters. Although 63% positive reviews and a mediocre 2.5 stars from Ebert represent nothing to write home about, those numbers make it the best-reviewed film of a throwaway week. I've seen it, and I'd say those numbers overrate it. It's one of those dreary romantic-pseudo-comedies in which nothing is really that funny, but rather bittersweet, and people analyze their own relationships and everyone else's ad infinitum. It's not really a romantic comedy or a romantic drama, because it's neither tragic nor funny. I guess it's a romantic-cute (they need a word to describe these), and it's obviously a chick-flick. It's rated R, but that's a VERY soft R. Box office expectation: out of the top ten.

(The Lorax is expected to hold on to the #1 slot. Project X will probably battle Silent House for the #3 and #4 slots.)
