There's nothing much worth reporting. These next two weeks consist of the lull before the anticipated Avengers storm. Hey, Thor is the God of Thunder, so he should be able to whip up a helluva storm, and I guess he has done just that, because advance ticket sales indicate that The Avengers will perform in the same box office arena as The Dark Knight or The Hunger Games.
But this week ... well, we have this crap:
The Lucky One: 3000+ theaters, 41% positive reviews, PG-13. Not for guys. Romantic drama starring Zac Efron, based on a book written by the dreaded Nicholas Sparks. This may unseat The Hunger Games from the box office throne. God knows why. I guess there are plenty of teenage girls in the world.
Think Like a Man: 1800 theaters, 45% positive reviews, PG-13. Romantic comedy with an African-American cast, based upon a book by actor-comedian Steve Harvey. This film also has a chance at the top spot, but The Lucky One has the advantage of all those extra theaters.
Chimpanzee: 1500+ theaters, 64% positive reviews, G. One of those Disney adventures that blends real-life nature footage with human voice-overs. Jane Goodall was a consultant on the project and has been discussing it on the talk shows. Disney got incredibly lucky when they filmed this, and it turned out far better than they expected or deserved. The story that developed before their lenses in the chimpanzee tribe was far better than anything they could have staged. (Orphaned male chimp is uncharacteristically adopted by the alpha male, whose devotion to the child causes him to neglect his leadership duties!) The film is expected to gross about $5-$6 million this weekend.
