snopes.com: "Don't Buy Gas on April 15" ... Will that get the oil companies' attention?
Hell, no.

Especially if you tank up on April 14th in advance of the proposed "gas out." In that case the people in the gasoline supply chain will end up with the same amount of money, but they will get it sooner, thus gaining the value of one day's interest on your money (which you, in turn, will lose). You will actually improve somebody's cash flow.

If you want to get the oil companies' attention, the only way to do it is genuine sacrifice. In the short term, for example, people could drive absolutely nowhere in July unless required to. In the long term, ditch your gas-guzzling SUV and get yourself an economical car. The only way to have an impact is to reduce consumption one way or another: less driving or more miles per gallon or both. And doing THAT would also benefit the environment.

Will something like that really happen through a concerted internet effort?

Don't hold your breath.
