There's only one new movie in wide distribution this week: Dark Shadows (PG-13), starring Johnny Depp, directed by Tim Burton. It has not been received well by the critics, with only 43% of the reviews positive so far. The film will be in 3700 theaters and is expected to gross about $30-$35 million. That's not bad, but will be nowhere near enough to dethrone The Avengers, which is expected to hold about half of last week's $200M. Pencil in Dark Shadows for a solid second.
There's one other movie worth mentioning, I suppose, which is a PG-13 flick targeting female audiences: Girl in Progress. It features Eva Mendes, Patricia Arquette, Matthew Modine, and a young newcomer named Cierra Ramirez. Since it will only reach 300 theaters, it is not expected to crack the top ten, and the fact that it has been widely panned (only 33% positive reviews) will not boost its chances.
