Battleship (PG-13). Opens Friday. 42% positive reviews, 3700 theaters. You know what this is, kinda. If you liked Independence Day, this is more of the same. Critics' verdict: better than expected. There's no consensus about its box office potential. It is expected to finish second, but various analysts expect it to be as low as $20M, as high as $35M.
The Dictator (R). Opens today. 66% positive reviews; 3000 theaters. Sacha Baron Cohen is up to his usual tricks: saying the stuff that the rest of us only think, and thus making us cringe and laugh at the same time. The critics' verdict: very offensive and very funny. It will probably finish third or fourth this weekend, with $15-$18M.
What to Expect When You're Expecting (PG-13). 27% positive reviews, 3000 theaters. Chick-flick. Typical critic: "Considering the appealing cast and relevant subject, the movie is shapeless, rambling, and shallow, unfolding as a pilot for a broad TV sitcom." It is expected to do approximately as well as The Dictator, and will presumably battle that film for third.
Dark Shadows is expected to finish fifth, but could conceivably take third of fourth if The Dictator and/or Expecting produce disappointing results.
I think you all know which film will be #1 again.
