Brave grossed $66m. It is the 13th consecutive Pixar movie to open in first place.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter tanked, grossing only $16M and failing to take second place away from Madagascar 3, but AL:VH seemed like a James Cameron movie compared to Seeking a Friend at the End of the World, which took in less than $4 million in nationwide distribution. Of course profitability includes two components, revenues and expenses, which means that Abe Lincoln is probably a bigger bomb than Seeking a Friend. The latter was made for a modest $10 million, while the vampire-hunting emancipator rang up a $70 million tab for Fox. Things will not improve for either film because they both scored weak C+ ratings from their opening night audiences, per CinemaScore.
Moonrise Kingdom expanded to 395 screens and finished just out of the top ten. It almost matched the gross of Seeking a Friend despite being in a quarter as many venues. It finished second in revenues per theater among all films in 100 or more theaters, losing only to Brave.
Woody Allen's new film pulled in a phenomenal $75,000 per theater, but that's no surprise, given that it was a Woody Allen premiere available in only three theaters in NY and LA.
