There are three new movies in wide distribution:
The Amazing Spider-Man (opened Tuesday in 4300 theaters). 72% positive reviews. You know what this is. It is expected to take first place with about $70 million for the normal 3-day weekend and $140 million for the long weekend which started Tuesday.
Katy Perry: Part of Me (opened Thursday in 2700 theaters). Improbably enough, 76% positive reviews. Concert backstage pass film. It should finish around 5th place with approximately $15m.
Savages (opens today in 2600 theaters). 55% positive reviews. Oliver Stone's latest, a lurid Tarantino-style film filled with brutal violence and over-the-top action. Rated R for every possible cause, including nudity and "graphic sexuality." The only female nudity is from Leana Chavez (breasts), but various other women provide sexy cheesecake, including Blake Lively and Salma Hayek. It's expected to take in about $12m or thereabouts.
I have no idea what the story is with Woody's To Rome With Love. The Weekend Warrior says it will be expanding to enough theaters to land in the top ten with about $3 or $4 million, but The Numbers doesn't even have it on this week's theater count, even though they list films in as few as a single theater. I know it must be in at least one theater, because it's playing about five miles from me.
