As I read this, the word "inscrutable" came back to me from my uninformed childhood understanding of Chinese people, which came pretty much entirely from the old Charlie Chan movies aired on Sunday morning TV. As I recall, we had only two TV stations then, and the only other option was "Lamp Unto My Feet," which was some of kind of God thingy masquerading as drama. On a snowed-in Sunday morning, Charlie Chan was the go-to choice.
Two channels. Neither of them broadcast after 1:00 AM. They played the star-spangled banner before sign-off, went black for about five hours, then began the next day with a prayer.
It seems difficult to believe those days ever existed when we look back from a world of a gazillion channels. I think I have one 24/7 channel that is entirely devoted to Icelandic Ram Groping.
