"This weekend marked the lowest cumulative ticket sales in over a decade. The last frame to notch worse overall ticket sales was Sept. 21-23, 2001 — two weekends after the 9/11 attacks — when only one new wide release entered theaters: Mariah Carey’s infamous bomb Glitter."
"The Words, the generically titled writing drama that’s garnered attention for being the meeting place of the are-they-or-aren’t-they? couple Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana, started its run in third place with just $5 million from 2,801 theaters."
"The Cold Light of Day opened in 13th place with a truly dismal $1.8 million from 1,511 theaters. The $25 million film, which Summit co-financed with Intrepid Pictures, has been on the shelf for a while, but the studio had to dump it somewhere — and they chose a weekend when its failure would not likely draw much attention. Audiences issued the thriller a D+ CinemaScore grade."
Scoop's notes:
D+ is an abysmal grade. Even a B, which was the score for The Words, is mediocre at best. Remember that grade is assigned by audiences who come to see the film on its opening night.
Branded, the allegedly incoherent, sorta sci-fi flick about corporate mind control, took in $251k in 307 theaters. That's less than Oogieloves, but will not get the record because it was only in 300 theaters, thus took in far more per theater that the Oogsters. Somehow, this film managed to get one "fresh" on RT from, of all places, The New York Times! Granted, it was a half-hearted "fresh," but other reviewers were much less charitable, issuing pronouncements like "the worst of the worst" and "makes absolutely no sense."
