New Movies In Theaters This Week - Rotten Tomatoes

New Movies In Theaters This Week - Rotten Tomatoes
There are six new movies this week. Two of them will be in very wide distribution, a third will receive a moderate nationwide run, and the other three will receive limited trials (between 100 and 200 theaters). This week's reviews run just about the largest possible range - from 99% positive (Finding Nemo 3D) to 0% (Last Ounce of Courage).

Finding Nemo 3D. (Rated G; 2900 theaters; 99% positive reviews). You all know what this is, namely the same old film, albeit a very charming one, repackaged for 3D. It is expected to gross between $25 and $30 million.

Resident Evil: Retribution. You know what this is as well. (Rated R for violence; 3100 theaters; 17% positive reviews). These things are always awful, but that doesn't matter to their core audience. The RE films inevitably make a lot of money in spite of acerbic reviews, so the box office experts expect that this one will also do just fine: just above or just below Finding Nemo.

Last Ounce of Courage (1400 theaters; 0% positive reviews; rated PG). This is a faith-affirming film. The experts expect this to gross only about a million clams, but these sorts of films have often fooled the experts in the past because they are marketed off the beaten path.

Arbitrage (197 theaters; rated R for language; 80% positive reviews - including the coveted four stars from Roger Ebert). It has a solid cast (Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Tim Roth) and excellent reviews, so we wonder "why only 190 theaters?" I dunno the answer to that, but I do know it's a mystery/drama about fraud in the financial markets. I may go see it myself if I'm feeling ambitious, because ... well ... dude, look at the other choices.

Stolen (141 theaters; rated R for violence and language; 0% positive reviews - but based upon only two critics, and the reviews were not really that harsh). Nic Cage plays a criminal who has served his time and wants to go straight, but others think he stashed the money from his last heist. A psycho kidnaps his daughter as leverage to get the alleged stash, so ol' Nic has to get back in the game. Blah, blah, blah, yadda, yadda, usual stuff. (Note: some sources say it is rated PG-13.)

Barfi! (132 theaters, no reviews, unrated). Heart-warming musical tale from Bollywood, in Hindi. It was very well reviewed in India, but how the hell did this get into 132 theaters in the States?
