It turns out that the weekend's box office contest was not that close at all. End of Watch actually won by almost a million dollars. The earlier estimates for House at the End of the Street were significantly inflated.
PTA's The Master took 7th place despite being in a mere 788 theaters. It finished higher than 12 other films in broader distribution, and it easily finished with the highest gross per theater. Having noted that, I should in fairness explain that those facts are not explained by its popularity, but rather by the unpopularity of the competition. In absolute terms The Master's $5500 average per screen is not impressive at all. That would extrapolate to only $17M if the average held up in 3100 theaters, which it almost certainly would not.
