Weekend Box Office Results for September 28-30, 2012
Hotel Transylvania is a hit. ($43M, CinemaScore A-.)
It set the all-time record for the best September weekend, and it did so by a great margin. That record had held since 2002.

Second place went to Looper ($21M), which also made the top 25 on that list. Surprisingly, given 93% positive reviews, Looper received only a mediocre B grade from CinemaScore audiences.

The a cappella musical film, Pitch Perfect, did exceptionally well in a trial run, grossing $15K per screen, compared to $12K for Hotel Transylvania. It also merited an A from CinemaScore audiences. 74% of the audience consisted of women.

Won't Back Down went in the other direction. It has a decent chance of becoming the worst-grossing film of all time among those in 2500 or more theaters. Based on the preliminary estimates, it is in second place on that list, only $64K from the "championship." Such a small amount could easily be the difference between the estimate and the actual, but we won't know for sure until the bean counters do their thing. Oddly enough for a potential "worst of all time," this film scored an A- from CinemaScore, indicating that the poor performance may have been the result of some major marketing blunders.
