There really weren't any surprises in the results, but it's interesting how quickly our perceptions can change. Just two weeks ago, both South Carolina and West Virginia were dreaming of a national championship. Yeah, that's not gonna happen.
Apart from those two games, the only question in my mind is, "Don't they play any defense in Texas?" Texas Tech beat TCU 56-53, while Texas outslugged Baylor 56-50. We can blame the Tech/TCU score on three overtimes, but the Longhorns and Baylor each put up 50 in regulation. Only in Texas (and West Virginia) can you give up 50 and win. I guess you can look at it another way: how often can you put up 50 points and 600 yards of offense from scrimmage - and lose? Baylor did just that last night, for the second time this year!
- South Carolina was pounded 44-11 by the Gators, thus incurring a second consecutive loss, the severity of which will almost certainly drop them out of the top ten.
- West Virginia lost at home to Kansas St, a 55-14 rout which came on the heels of a 49-14 drubbing by Texas Tech last week! They have allowed an average of 53 points per game in the past four weeks, and this one could have been much worse, but for KSU having emptied the bench after the third quarter. Last week's loss left Geno Smith's reputation reasonably well intact, but this week's had to hurt the guy's Heisman prospects, especially since he was outperformed face-to-face by fellow Heisman candidate Collin Klein. Geno averaged only 4.5 yards per attempt and threw two picks. On the other side of the field, Klein was 19-for-21 and could do no wrong. The kid passed for three touchdowns and ran for four more.
