There are only two movies in wide release this weekend, it it seems that neither is worth seeing , although one is expected to rake in the moola.
Paranormal Activity 4, rated R for "language and terror," will be in about 3400 theaters. 33% positive reviews. It is expected to finish first with a gross in the mid-40s, taking in about as much as numbers 2-5 added together. God only knows why.
Alex Cross (PG-13) is an attempt to reboot the series about the titular psychologist/detective created by James Patterson and formerly played by Morgan Freeman in two other films about a decade ago. Tyler Perry takes over the role. It will finish somewhere between second and fifth, with a gross in low double figures. Maybe. The critics have hated it in general (only 13% of the reviews have been positive), and The New York Times called it: "A grim, dispiritingly stupid waste of time, energy, money and talent ..." It did get one recommendation from a critic at Crave: "Could very well be the funniest film of the year. It's so, so bad, that I totally recommend you see it."
