Pitch Perfect, the PG-13 musical comedy about college women singing in a cappella groups, expands from 300 theaters to 2700. 74% positive reviews. It will probably gross abound $13M and should finish 4th or 5th.
Taken 2 is Liam Neeson kicking some more PG-13 ass. The critics have not smiled with approval on this one (15% positive reviews), but it is still expected to dominate the box office over the weekend with a gross in the 40s from some 3600 theaters.
Frankenweenie (PG) is the latest animated effort from Tim Burton. It is obviously competing with Hotel Transylvania for the family audience, and is not expected to do well in their mano-a-mano battle, despite the fact that the critics consider it a much better movie (83% positive reviews vs 44% for HT). It is expected to gross some $18M in 3100 theaters, good for third place. Another Disney disappointment?
Butter, a spoof of sports movies, is centered on butter carving. It will appear in selected cities (90 theaters). Rated R, but Olivia Wilde plays a non-nude stripper.
Paperboy, a lurid film noir which is sort of Pulp Fiction meets Wild Things, will make it to 11 theaters, which means you can forget about it unless you live in NY or LA. It's campy and sleazy, but the reasons for the R rating once again do not include nudity. Sigh.
