Whether you agreed with the famous idealist or not, you have to admire that he had a kind heart, and that he fought hard for what he believed in.
And he fought clean.
Unfortunately, the world is not a kind place, so lambs like McGovern are bound eventually to be devoured by wolves.
If I could determine history's final words about McGovern, I would choose the words Hunter Thompson penned way back in 1972: "George McGovern, for all his mistakes and his imprecise talk about new politics and honesty in government, understands what a fantastic monument to all the best instincts of the human race this country might have been, if we could have kept it out of the hands of greedy little hustlers like Richard Nixon."
Amen to that, brother.
