New Movies In Theaters March 1st - Rotten Tomatoes

New Movies In Theaters March 1st - Rotten Tomatoes
There are four new films in wide release this week:

21 and Over (2700 theaters, 28% positive reviews) is an R-rated youthploitation film, 80s-style. The justification for the R rating includes crude sexual content and graphic nudity. Unfortunately, I have no advance intel on the specific nature of these naked shenanigans.

Or, if you want to see a 1980s film, but don't like comedies or naked women, you can see poor ol' Ed Harris trudge valiantly through the dubious honor of starring in Phantom (2000 theaters, 18% positive reviews), a Cold War film about a Soviet submarine. The R rating is for violence. with no mention of sex or nudity, presumably because there were neither hot chicks nor hanky-panky on Soviet submarines. Richard Roeper wrote: "Ed Harris in Phantom is like Steve Carlton with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1972 - delivering a wall-to-wall, amazing performance that's lost in a sea of dreadfulness." For the record, several other respected critics said that the film is pretty darned good, although you'll probably feel that you've seen it all before.

Jack the Giant Slayer (3500 theaters, 61% positive reviews, PG-13) is this week's mega-budget fantasy epic. "Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants." Hollywood big-shot Bryan Singer (X-Men, The Usual Suspects) directed.

The Last Exorcism, Part II is ... well, I think you can figure it out. I guess the previous one was only the second-last exorcism. (2700 theaters, no reviews, PG-13)

Box office guesses:

Jack the Giant Slayer: mid twenties, first place

21 and Over: mid teens, second place

The Last Exorcism: low double figures, third place if it makes that prediction.

Phantom: not even the relatives of the cast will see this.
