Georgia Lady Bulldogs upset the mighty Stanford Cardinal

Georgia Lady Bulldogs upset the powerful Stanford Cardinal

If you don't follow women's hoops, the point is that this is a really big deal, on the same level as, or perhaps even more surprising than, FGCU's win over Georgetown in the men's tournament.

Stanford (ranked #4 in the Country and one of the #1 seeds in the tournament) had only lost two games all year: one to their cross-state conference rival, 31-3 Cal (#6 in the land); the other to 32-3 U Conn (ranked third in the country). Stanford was so good that they even managed to beat #1 Baylor during the season, and that was the only game Baylor lost this year or last! Yup, that's right, Baylor has gone 74-1 in the past two years, and Stanford gave them that one loss. (Feisty Stanford also ended U Conn's NCAA record 90-game run in 2010.)

Georgia, on the other hand, lost six games this year, including three to unranked teams.

It's not going to get any easier for Georgia, despite their having beaten a #1 seed. Cal is up next, and they are essentially just as strong as Stanford (the two teams split two games during the year, as they each finished 17-1 in the conference). In other words, Georgia will need a second, virtually identical miracle if they want to advance to the Big Show.

The other three #1 seeds (Notre Dame, U Conn and Baylor) are still in the hunt.

Trivia:

Baylor, Notre Dame, Stanford and Connecticut were also the #1 seeds last year, and all four made it to the final four.

Stanford and Connecticut have each been in the final four in every one of the last five years. U Conn has won two of those championships, but Stanford went home empty-handed each time. Five consecutive FF appearances is the record, which Connecticut is likely to extend this year to six. Tennessee once went to the final four 11 times in 14 years, but never achieved five in a row.
