There are three new movies in wide release this weekend, while Spring Breakers expands to 100 theaters.
The Croods is a new animated PG film from DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox. Sounds like a good one if you go to movies with children. "The Croods tells the story of the world's first family road trip. When their cave is destroyed, the Crood family must embark on a comedy adventure into strange and spectacular territory in search of a new home. As if patriarch Grug (Nic Cage) didn't already have enough to handle, it goes from bad to worse when they encounter an imaginative nomad named Guy (Ryan Reynolds.) With Guy's help the Croods conquer their fear of the outside world and discover that they have exactly what it takes to survive - each other." (3900 theaters; 80% positive reviews.)
Admission is a PG-13 romantic comedy with Paul Rudd and Tina Fey. Even if you like both of them, you may not like this. (41% positive reviews; 2100 theaters.) General consensus: "The biggest problem with this movie is that Tina Fey didn't write it."
Olympus has Fallen is an action thriller which sounds like a re-make of Die Hard, except substituting the White House for an urban skyscraper. "When the White House (Secret Service Code: "Olympus") is captured by a terrorist mastermind and the President is kidnapped, disgraced former Presidential guard Mike Banning finds himself trapped within the building. As our national security team scrambles to respond, they are forced to rely on Banning's inside knowledge to help retake the White House, save the President and avert an even bigger crisis. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) directs an all-star cast featuring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett, Melissa Leo, Ashley Judd and Rick Yune." It is rated R for language and violence, and will be in some 3000 theaters. It is currently running 56% positive reviews based on only 16 reviews. Still, that means the film already has 9 positive reviews, which is already far more than a typical recent Gerard Butler film. (Movie 43 had only 3 positive reviews, as did Playing for Keeps.)
Box office:
The Croods should take the #1 spot with some $40M.
Olympus Has Fallen should battle Oz for second place with a total somewhere near $20M.
Admission should take fourth, but with an unimpressive gross in the neighborhood of $10M.
The expansion of Spring Breakers should get it into sixth or seventh with a gross in the range of $5 to $7M.
