Three new PG-13 films will be in wide distribution. Indications are that all three will be a complete waste of your time and money.
Overview:
G.I. Joe: Retaliation - 3700 theaters starting Thursday. You can figure out what this is: brainless, frenetic, non-stop explosions, with an occasional smirk and quip from Bruce Willis and/or The Rock. (32% positive reviews, but only 19% from the top critics.)
Tyler Perry's Temptation - 2000 theaters starting Friday. "A bold exploration of the intrigue and perils of infidelity." Oh, call me a cynic if you must, but I'm betting it isn't all that "bold" if it is rated PG-13. (No critics have seen this in advance, but given their usual lack of enthusiasm for Tyler Perry, I'd set the over/under around 25%.)
The Host - 3200 theaters starting Friday. More crap from the woman who wrote the Twilight books. According to the critics, this one makes Twilight seem as profound and eloquent as Hamlet. (The critics were just about unanimous in their disdain: 10% of them were positive, but the only real positive comments praised the cast for having tried to weave this straw into gold.)
Box Office:
G.I. Joe is expected to win the weekend with about $40 million, and a holdover (The Croods) will take second, or even first if Joe bombs. Four films will compete for the third spot. Tyler Perry's solid following is expected to lift Temptation a gross in the mid-teens, finishing somewhere between third and sixth in total gross, and taking just about a sure third in the average gross per theater. The Host will fall into that same 3-6 cluster, but will probably be nearer the bottom of the group despite being in far more theaters than Temptation.
