Jackie Robinson Movie Box Office: Overperforming

Jackie Robinson Movie Box Office: Overperforming
I went to see it on Friday at 1:00 in the afternoon. I got there a bit late, and was surprised to see that the theater was packed! "42" should top $25M for the weekend, and pulled a rare A+ CinemaScore, so it should continue to perform well in upcoming weeks.

Box Office Mojo wrote, "The Jackie Robinson biopic debuted to an estimated $9.1 million from 3,003 locations on Friday. That's easily the best start ever for a baseball movie ahead of The Benchwarmers ($6.8 million) and Moneyball ($6.7 million)."

On the other side of the ledger, Mojo wrote: "Scary Movie 5 tanked with $5.5 million at 3,402 theaters. That sets a new low for the Scary Movie franchise behind Scary Movie 2 ($7.2 million), and is off 71 percent from Scary Movie 4's $19 million opening day at the same time in 2006. Finally, it's noticeably lower than January horror spoof A Haunted House ($6.8 million), which didn't have any brand recognition."

By the way, the reviews are in for this film, and it is currently sitting at a sterling 6% at RT. Typical comments:

"A film composed almost entirely of jokes that were much funnier when you read them on Twitter years ago."

"I have been to funerals a LOT less sad than this laughless 85 minutes."

"There's a spoof of Rise of the Planet of the Apes in which gorillas throw their feces at the wall to see if it sticks, and you can't help wondering if this is actual documentary footage of the script meetings."

"Woefully, painfully unfunny."
