The only new film in wide release this week is Oblivion. Starring Tom Cruise, it's a new sci-fi film about a dystopian future. I previewed it a couple of weeks ago and found it well worth my time. The story is not exceptionally original or exceptionally deep, but there are some plot twists that you will probably not anticipate, and the visual presentation is imaginative and absolutely spectacular in several scenes, so it provides plenty that sci-fi fans will love. (58% positive reviews; PG-13; about 3800 theaters)
Lacking any competition, Oblivion will probably gross between $35 and $40 million and should take the #1 spot with ease. Last week's champ, 42, took in $27M in its first weekend, so it will fall to $20M or lower even with the expected great word-of-mouth, thus finishing a distant second.
