There are two new movies in wide distribution this week:
Grown-Ups 2 is the latest from Adam Sandler. (PG-13, 3500 theaters, 8% positive reviews.) The critics hate Adam in general, but 8% is low even by his minimal standards. On the other hand, the original Grown Ups pulled only 10% positive reviews, but grossed more than $160 million domestically.
Pacific Rim is ... well, the official description begins like this: "When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end." I know that sounds like crap, but it's directed by the very talented Guillermo del Toro, and the critics have given it a solid reception. RT's summary says, "Pacific Rim is a solid modern creature feature bolstered by fantastical imagery and an irresistible sense of fun." (72% positive reviews, PG-13, 3200 theaters).
Box office: the two new films are supposed to join Despicable Me 2 in a three-way battle for first place, with all three films expected to be somewhere in the vicinity of $40M.
