Many people in the arts are referred to as "an American cultural treasure." In Wes Anderson's case, it is actually true. His films are unique, distinctive, and nuckin' futz in a good way. Even his lesser films are touched with genius and originality. Although there are some European filmmakers who can be so described (let's say Giuseppe Tornatore, for example), there is no other American remotely like Wes, which is a compliment, of course, but in another sense is also a sad commentary on the state of the cinematic art. There SHOULD be more people like him, because he needs about two or three years to assemble one of his richly detailed films, so we fans seem to wait forever to devour each one, and nobody else seems to bust our hunger along the way.
