'Bama is now #1 in both human polls and 4 of the 6 computer rankings. They are ranked #2 on the other two computer systems, and get 111 of 122 human votes, for an overall rating of .9937. Three other teams are fairly close behind (Oregon, OSU and FSU), after which there is a massive drop from 4th to 5th.
"Why is Baylor not up there with the big four?" you wonder. Well, Baylor is rated a very strong 5th by the humans, but the computers don't give them much love (10th) because the team has simply run up big scores against patsies. They now have a tough schedule the rest of the way, so they will either prove they belong or fall by the wayside.
In other Big 12 misery, the computers hate Oklahoma State, awarding them a perfect zero rating, but the humans like them. Oklahoma State is 12th in the USA Today poll! The discrepancy is immaterial because Oklahoma State will finish the season against Baylor and Oklahoma, so we'll eventually find out whether they can play.
Speaking of the Big 12, my Texas Longhorns, although unranked, are leading the conference! They played three of the weakest conference opponents, although they did beat Oklahoma. Again, time will tell. They will finish the season against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Baylor.
Biggest gainers: Oklahoma up five places; South Carolina the big winner at plus seven.
Biggest drops: Texas Tech down five places; UCLA down eight; Virginia Tech the big loser by going completely off the chart from #14! (VT dropped to #31 in the AP poll and #27 in USA Today. Losing to Duke is a bad thing unless a basketball is involved.)
