What a week! #1 Alabama lost, and #3 Ohio State should have.
The astounding Alabama loss changes everything. The championship game is now shaping up as a match-up of Ohio State and Florida State, with Auburn and Missouri lurking in the wings. Auburn and Missouri will play each other for the SEC championship. Although Alabama is locked out of the conference championship, I suppose they will get the second SEC bowl bid for the BCS series, with the Auburn/Missouri loser doomed to a minor bowl. I am assuming that those three teams will be 3-4-5 this week, given the loss by #6 Clemson.
It is possible that Auburn could leapfrog OSU for the #2 spot this week, but that would provoke a tremendous controversy. At any rate, both of those teams still have conference championships to win, and that could result in losses for either or both. If OSU loses to Michigan State, the final #2 would presumably be the winner of the Auburn/Missouri game. Since the national championship pits #1 vs #2, Missouri fans still have an outside shot at all the marbles! That's not a surprise at all, because Mizzou has a strong case for a place in that game. Their only loss was a double overtime squeaker against a tough South Carolina squad that just squashed #6 Clemson. On the other hand, Missouri's qualifications don't really matter unless they beat Auburn.
Noteworthy: Way back in the pre-season AP poll, 43 teams received at least one vote, and neither Auburn nor Missouri made the top 43! FSU, the dominant #1 this year, was only rated #11 in the pre-season rankings. The voters did correctly evaluate Ohio State, which was ranked #2 then and will probably be #2 again now when the new standings are released.
