There is only one new film in wide national release this week, Marvel's latest, Thor: The Dark World. (PG-13; 3800 theaters; 72% positive reviews). You all know what that is.
If you're not into super-heroes, there are three films expanding to limited national distribution:
12 Years a Slave, a possible Best Picture nominee, expands to 1100 theaters. (96% positive reviews; rated R).
About Time (1200 theaters; 66% positive reviews; rated R). Romantic time-travel fantasy from Richard Curtis (Love, Actually).
All is Lost (400 theaters, PG-13; 94% positive reviews). The cast consists entirely of Robert Redford, who is lost at sea. Bob, with nobody to talk to, has only about ten lines of dialogue. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound like a mass-market film. That's because it isn't. It is, however, another possible Oscar contender.
Box office:
You already know this, right?
Thor will take the #1 spot. Excluding Harry Potter and Twilight movies, the all-time November record is $88 million, and second place is $70 million. Thor will probably fall in between them, although topping $88M is not out of the question.
12 Years a Slave has done well it its trial runs, and it should crack the top ten despite being in limited distro. Maybe $7M.
About Time might sneak onto the bottom of the top ten list with $4-$5M.
As for ol' Bob Redford's film ... well ... the size of the audiences for All is Lost should be larger than the size of the cast.
