Most derogatory terms for women have an analogous male term. The discrepancy is that the male terms also are not necessarily strictly derogatory but may often convey respect (albeit grudgingly), i.e., assholes, dicks, motherfuckers.
However, while I disagree that the word "bitchy" is in and of itself sexist, I fully agree that its use in a purportedly scientific article is sexist, because they'd never use the word "asshole" if it was about men.
No, we'd refer to them as "assholes".
