Some examples:
They have scored 515 points with three games to play. The NFL record is 589. (Needed: 25 per game; now averaging: about 40 per game). They seem certain to break this record. Their three remaining games are against San Diego (6-7), Oakland (4-9) and Houston (2-11).
Manning has thrown 45 TDs, the record is 50. (Needed: 2 per game; now averaging: nearly 3.5 per game). He seems certain to break this record because the Broncos can't let down. They must keep winning to avoid losing the permanent home field advantage, therefore possibly playing against the Pats in Foxboro. They are one game ahead of the Pats now, and must remain one ahead. If they finish with the same record, the Pats will get the #1 seed because they defeated Denver face-to-face. The Pats have a slightly more difficult road in their last three games: Baltimore (7-6) in Baltimore, Miami (7-6) in Miami, and a home game against the Bills (4-9). Baltimore and Miami will be pulling out all the stops, because they are both battling for that last playoff spot!
Manning has amassed 4522 yards. The record is 5476. (Needed: 318 per game; now averaging: about 348 per game). Maybe; maybe not. It will probably come down to whether he needs to win the last game or can rest up for the playoffs.
While we're at it - Prater kicked a 64-yard field goal today. That, too, is a record.
