Actually there is really only one very interesting point made by the article - the Cumberbatch character who is vilified in the film was highly praised in the book upon which the film is made.
The character played by Fassbender, however, is true to reality.
I suppose the filmmaker did not want to show the "bright side of the picture," in the words of the man who wrote the book, and that seems to be a reasonable position. "But for many it remains a regret that William Prince Ford, the one man who treated Solomon Northup well in life, couldn’t have been given a more three-dimensional portrayal in the film version of his 12 years as a slave."
