There are two new movies in wide release this week, and they have each been savaged by the critics.
Pompeii is a sword-and-sandals epic about a gladiator who finds himself in the path of lava. It stars "Jon Snow" from Game of Thrones. (2600+ theaters, PG-13, 33% positive reviews)
3 Days to Kill: "Kevin Costner is a dangerous international spy, who is determined to give up his high stakes life to finally build a closer relationship with his estranged wife and daughter." But first, following the ultimate action movie cliche, he must complete the dreaded "one last mission." Spoiler: his wife and his pre-teen daughter are trapped in a love triangle with Osama bin Laden ... well, maybe not, but something equally believable. The critics have said that this one makes Pompeii seem like the next coming of "Casablanca." There was, however, one notable dissenting voice among the reviewers. Roger Moore thought it worked as a demented comedy. He wrote: "Daft and sloppy, dark and yeah -- funny. As funny as any movie where torturing terrorists and taking their advice on raising a teen can be."(2800+ theaters, PG-13, 11% positive reviews.)
Box office:
Neither of these turkeys has a chance to unseat LEGO from the catbird's perch. They will each gross somewhere in the neighborhood of $10M-$15M. One of them could sneak ahead of About Last Night to claim the #2 spot, but they are more likely to be battling RoboCop for third, and there is always a reasonable chance that one or both of them will perform considerably worse than that and finish as low as sixth.
