There are four new films in wide release for the Valentine's Day weekend. (Robocop opens Wednesday.)
A remake of About Last Night with a cast less white than Rob Lowe. That would not be difficult. Edgar Winter and Joan Rivers are not as white as Rob Lowe. The original was one of the best of the romantic comedies, a genre rarity in that it was both romantic and funny, thanks to the fact that each of the lovers had a cynical sidekick, and the sidekicks hated each other. (2000 theaters; rated R for "sexual content and language"; 75% positive reviews)
A remake of Robocop. (3400 theaters; PG-13; 53% positive reviews, opens Wednesday). The general consensus of the reviews is that it's OK, but really doesn't improve on the original.
A remake of Endless Love (2900 theaters; PG-13; 50% positive reviews). Typical comment: "A flowerier adaptation of the Scott Spencer romance than Zeffirelli's '80s version, it's tailor-made for the Nicholas Sparks crowd."
Winter's Tale (2700 theaters; PG-13; 33% positive reviews, based on three reviews). An important-sounding film from a dense source novel which takes place in an alternate reality. It has a Shakespearean title and a lot of serious ak-TORS performing in a magical realism tale that takes place in a time and space sorta like modern NYC, but different. The cinematographer is the great Caleb Deschanel. Given the ambitious scope of the project, it could be very good, but my guess is that if it were really good it would have been released in the December holiday season to establish award eligibility.
By the way, last week's Vampire Academy finished with 11% positive reviews, which is a lot better than I expected.
Box office:
The LEGO movie will probably hold the top spot.
Robocop will probably finish second with some $30 million over the weekend and another $5-10M on Wednesday and Thursday.
About Last Night should finish third with $20 million or so.
A carry-over, The Monuments Men, should be fourth.
Endless Love and Winter's Tale should take the next two slots with grosses in the $10-15M range. One of them could grab the #4 spot if it gets some momentum going.
