I saw this movie, and my quarrel with it is that it approached an R-rated premise with a sentimental, PG heart. As the Arizona republic observed: “For a movie filled with amateur porn, sex toys, cocaine and Cameron Diaz‘s butt, ‘Sex Tape’ is awfully tame.”
Tame and, at times, syrupy sweet.
Who was in the target audience they envisioned? That's hard to identify. Teen boys couldn't get in, and if they could, they aren't much interested in a woman as old as their moms, attractive though she may be. The linked article says they were going for a date night crowd. Not many guys would say "Oh, we're going to see a movie called Sex Tape" to a prospective date, unless they had a rare and long-standing relationship. Hell, I'd like to find the woman I could take on that date.
(The actual audience skewed older and female - an odd power of attraction for a self-styled raunchy sex comedy.)
