Once again, most of the ranked teams played creampuff games, but there were a few interesting developments.
For the third consecutive week, UCLA barely hung on to beat an unranked opponent. (Texas 20-17)
USC fared even worse. They actually lost to an unranked opponent. (Boston College 37-31)
#6 Georgia lost a squeaker (38-35), but it wasn't a massive upset. Their opponent was conference rival South Carolina, which is also ranked in the Top 25.
Virginia Tech gets the record for multiple personalities. Last week they took down the #8 team in the nation, Ohio State. That vaulted them to the #17 spot in the country. This week, from that lofty position, they couldn't even defeat unranked, unheralded East Carolina. (28-21)
Let me mitigate that last comment by saying that East Carolina is just pretty damned good. It's unexpected, but true. Not only did they build up a 21-0 lead in defeating #17 VT this week, but they came pretty damned close to beating #21 South Carolina last week. They actually finished the game with more total yardage than the Gamecocks, and even held an early 13-7 lead in that game. You probably never heard of them, but those East Carolina Pirates can play some ball.
STAT o' the week:
Ohio State bounced back from their loss to VT last week by drubbing an outmatched intrastate competitor, winless Kent State. (Who knew they even had a football team? Even if you knew that, I'll bet you can't name the moniker of their sports teams. I couldn't. They are called the Kent State Golden Flashes, which sounds like a symptom of menopause.) Anyway, the amazing stat is that OSU has not lost to another Ohio team in 93 years! They got past the lowly Flashes easily enough (66-0, to be exact. It was 45-0 at halftime!), but they'll have one more chance to spoil the record this year when they play Cincinnati in two weeks. I don't expect Cincy to stop that streak by winning on the road, but they demonstrated a strong offense this week as their sophomore QB tossed 6 TD passes in his first collegiate start, so maybe the Bearcats will at least give OSU a scare.
