Once again ignoring the teams with Casper Milquetoast opponents, here's what happened.
#1 FSU, playing without the Heisman winner at his usual QB slot, snuck out a narrow victory in OT over Clemson, which was also in the top 25.
#2 Oregon went neck-and-neck with Washington State all the way, finally breaking a 31-31 deadlock with a fourth quarter TD. The game was about dead even, with Oregon gaining 501 yards from scrimmage, WSU 499. Washington State's QB, Connor Halliday, aired 63 passes.
#3 Bama eventually pulled away from the Florida Gators 41-21
#4 Oklahoma didn't have it so easy (45-33, after being tied at halftime), but then nobody finds it easy sledding when they take on West Virginia in Morgantown.
#5 Auburn beat #20 Kansas State (20-14) back on Thursday.
Two ranked SEC teams lost: #8 LSU (by 5) and #18 Missouri (by 4).
#14 South Carolina was down 14-3 to Vanderbilt before realizing that they were having a bad dream about losing to fucking Vanderbilt. They woke up and won by 14, but that was still an embarrassment for South Carolina, given that lowly Temple pounded Vanderbilt 37-7.
Mentioned in passing: I told you last week that unheralded East Carolina was surprisingly strong. It seems to be one of those rare occasions when I was right! They scored 70 against North Carolina (which was rated #25 and #26 in the two major polls)! The next statistic is going to look like a misprint - ECU amassed 789 yards from scrimmage, using 10 different ball carriers and six different receivers. I think the ECU Pirates may sneak into the top 25. Or maybe not. They were ranked #31 and #33 in the two major polls, but Sagarin's computer rankings place them farther back, at #50. By the way, ya gotta think it's going to be a long, hard season for the North Carolina Tar Heels because they just gave up 70 points and 789 yards to ECU - and now have to face Clemson and Notre Dame in the next three weeks. Ouch!
