It was a humdrum week except for TCU's 82 points of offensive fireworks. There were only two games between ranked teams:
* #19 Utah edged #20 USC
* #24 LSU edged #3 Ole Miss. It sounds like an upset, and it is, but LSU is damned good, so it's not a total surprise. Any team in the SEC can knock off the leaders. South Carolina played even with Auburn throughout their game, while Kentucky and Tennessee hung pretty tough with Alabama and Mississippi State. In fact, LSU should have won big yesterday. They outplayed Ole Miss in general, but squandered early opportunities by turning it over four times.
OK, I lied. Not ANY team can knock off the leaders on a good day. Maybe not Vanderbilt.
But all of the others.
Elsewhere, many ranked teams enjoyed a bye week, and all the active ranked teams managed to beat all their unranked opponents. The only two that had a hard time were UCLA and Ohio State. In both cases, the ranked team won, but required two overtimes.
The rankings will stay about where they are except that Ole Miss will drop out of the top four and LSU will advance a few spaces. I don't know which team will get the #4 spot. There are several candidates.
