The game between #5 Baylor and #9 TCU was one of the craziest in a long time. Here's the scene: 11 minutes left in the game, Baylor has already allowed 58 points, and is down by three touchdowns. Here's the result: Baylor wins. Amazin'. Baylor accumulated 782 yards of offense from scrimmage in that game and another 162 in kick returns. Despite scoring 58 points, TCU's offense wasn't actually that efficient. Yeah, I know that sounds crazy, but they were 22 for 48 passing and they had to punt 7 times. They managed to stay in the game with a pick-six, two other takeaways, and a 94-yard kickoff return.
As I mentioned last week, #2 Auburn wasn't likely to finish with fewer than two losses because they play the hardest schedule I've ever seen. They have the first one in the "L" column already, having lost to #3 Mississippi State. State had a surprisingly easy ride to victory. They went ahead 21-0 in Q1 and held on. With that loss, Auburn will drop to #6, #7 or #8 (behind the five big unbeaten teams: FSU, both Mississippis, Baylor and Notre Dame). Mississippi State has been excellent, but they still have 'Bama and Ole Miss on the schedule!
There will not be five big undefeated teams after next week because FSU will host Notre Dame in Tallahassee. If FSU gets through that one and can keep Jameis Winston in the line-up through his legal troubles, they should finish undefeated and earn a place in the final four. The other three spots? Who knows? Those tough remaining SEC games could alter everything.
Hard luck story of the week: Arkansas. They are 3-3, already an also ran, capable of losing as many as four more. And yet they may be a top 25 team. (Sagarin's computer rankings place them at #22.) Why so high? They have been so close to breaking through. They lost to A&M in overtime, and lost to 'Bama by 1!
