Tell this to the Oscar committee, and for that matter to movie critics, who have never found room in their hearts for comic masterpieces like Duck Soup and There's Something About Mary and Groundhog Day, yet constantly reward those who create mediocre melodrama like The Hours and The Kids are All Right.

Charlton Heston, an incredibly bad serious actor, has an Oscar. Leslie Nielsen, perhaps the greatest comic actor of all time, doesn't have jack shit. That pretty much says it all: as the movie industry sees it, the very worst drama is better than the best comedy.

  1. Couldn't agree more. Every actor knows that tragedy is easy, comedy is hard. But the more tragic the role, but more praise it gets.

In "WC Fields and Me," Carlotta Monti quotes Fields as saying that comedy is much more honest than drama. He said that when Indians attacked a wagon train and arrows were flying everywhere, you know that some of those arrows must have landed in the asses of settlers. In serious Westerns, they'd never show that. Comedies show it because comedy is more honest than drama.
