It'll be interesting to see how the committee ranks the playoff contenders now, since #1 lost, #2 (which has a loss) did not play, and numbers #3 (undefeated) and #4 barely survived road games.
You'd think they would be sorely tempted to jump Alabama from #5 to #1, especially since the Tide just knocked off #1.
Other noteworthy items:
Wisconsin's Heisman candidate, running back Melvin Gordon, turned in a season's worth of rushing in a single game. He rushed for 408 yards, an all-time record for major colleges, with only 25 carries, and he sat out the entire fourth quarter! And he didn't do that against some patsies. Before that game Nebraska was among the nation's top twenty teams and had the #10 rushing defense in the country. I have a feeling Nebraska's defensive ranking may drop a few notches after they allowed 581 rushing yards against the Badgers. (Yeah, that's right. Gordon's back-up guys added another 173 yards.) Wisconsin had seven rushing TDs, four by Gordon and three by the supporting cast. The Badgers now lead the Big 10 West.
In SEC action, #9 Auburn got their asses kicked by #15 Georgia, #17 LSU was shut out by unranked Arkansas, and #24 Texas A&M lost to unranked Missouri. Arkansas had been 0-5 in the conference before the LSU game, demonstrating that there are no easy games in the SEC unless you draw Vanderbilt. By the way, Missouri may be unranked, but they are still in the running to become SEC champions. They currently have the best record in the SEC East, although their only conference loss was an embarrassing 34-0 defeat in their head-to-head battle against Georgia. They are a long shot for the SEC championship, to be sure, but winning that conference is pretty much a free pass to the national playoff. That would be an amazing achievement for a team which is unranked this late in the year.
Passing note: Stanford dropped to 5-5, a sorry state of affairs for a team which was ranked #11 in the pre-season polls.
