Upstate New Yorkers open their doors, find only snow up to the ceiling

Upstate New Yorkers open their doors, find only snow up to the ceiling
Brings back memories.

I'm originally from the shore of Lake Ontario. During the Blizzard of '66, which took place on the last four days of January, we couldn't get out any of our doors. The snow went clear up to our gutters. My parents' house had a large attached garage, but there was no door from the garage to the house. (God only knows why. Bizarre 1930s construction concept.) In order to begin shoveling the snow, we first had to get into the garage to get some shovels. My dad and I had to climb out of a second-story window, get onto the garage roof, and slide down to a place where the snow had not drifted against the building. Fortunately, we could get to one of the garage doors, and it opened. We therefore established a tiny foothold on the massive project of clearing the doors, sidewalks and driveways. I don't remember how long it took, but I think it was more than one whole day. Not that it mattered. We couldn't have gone anywhere anyway. There was about six feet of snow on the side street into which our driveway debouched. Nearby Oswego, New York received 103" of snow during that storm, including 50" on Jan 31st alone, and neighboring Fair Haven, New York recorded winds up to Category 2 hurricane force.

As I recall, we missed something like two whole weeks of school.

The storm currently buffeting Buffalo is about as bad as the one I described. Forecasters say Buffalo could have 8 feet of snow before it abates. Check out the great pictures in the link above.
