Who would make the playoffs in the AFC if the season ended right now? After all the tie-breaking rules have been applied, Miami would emerge from the six-way tie for the second wild card slot. (Well, at least one Florida team is reasonably competent.) The Cleveland Browns, with the same record as 6th-seeded Miami, would actually be seeded 11th - far out of the picture. There are only four teams in the AFC with losing records, but those four are awful: three 2-10s and a 1-11.
In the NFC, Dallas would be eliminated by the tie-breakers if the season ended now. The Detroit Lions should be able to hold an edge over the 'Boys because they have an extremely easy schedule remaining, excluding their season-ender at Lambeau. Their next three games are against Tampa Bay, the Vikings and the Bears, teams with a combined record of 12-24. The Lions have already beaten the Bears and Vikings with ease, and pretty much everyone has defeated Tampa Bay, which is currently the worst team in the NFC. The Cowboys still have two other chances to make the playoffs: (1) they can still beat the Eagles for the division title; or (2) they can finish ahead of Seattle or Arizona for the other wild card slot.
