"Obama Welcomes End Of The Longest War In American History"

"Obama Welcomes End Of The Longest War In American History"

Actually, that would be the Korean War, which is still going on. The two parties agreed to a cease-fire in 1953, but never ended hostilities, so the war has been going on since 1950 - some 64 years. The second-longest, if memory serves, was our war against the Apache Nation, which lasted some 40 years in the 19th century until Geronimo surrendered in 1886.

To be more technical, neither Afghanistan nor Korea was a war at all, and the Apache War was simply a military deployment by executive action. Only Congress may declare war, and they have not chosen to do so since WW2. The last three countries we declared war upon were Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary (On June 5, 1942).

Korea was a military action authorized by the United Nations and funded by Congress.

Afghanistan was "extended military combat" authorized and funded by Congress.
