2015 GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS

2015 GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS

I was researching the IMDb ratings for the nominees. Something is very fishy about the ratings for Selma.

First of all, the film was rated only 6.1 recently, although it has now climbed to 7.1. Even the latter is incredibly low for a film rated 98% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Second, the ratings descend with age: 8.5 from voters under 18, 7.8 from voters aged 18-29, 7.0 from voters 30-44, and 6.3 from the 45+ crowd. Huh? What's that all about? This isn't exactly a kid-flick.

Third, more than 300 people, one of every seven voters, feel that the film should be rated 1/10.

I have not seen this film, but all of that evidence points to a concerted campaign to diminish it. Is it racist? I can't say for sure, but that certainly seems like a possibility.

Here's a breakdown of the IMDb and RT ratings for the ten Best Picture nominees:

Drama:
Selma: 98%, 7.1
Foxcatcher: 87%, 7.5
Boyhood: 98%, 8.4
The Imitation Game: 89%, 8.3
The Theory of Everything: 81%, 7.7

The Theory of Everything has an absolutely brilliant lead performance, but is just an OK film, not a great one. Gone Girl, although a trashy movie, is a brilliant trashy movie (88%, 8.3), and should have received that nomination.

Musical/comedy:
Into the Woods: 72%, 7.0
Birdman: 92%, 8.6
The Grand Budapest Hotel: 92%, 8.1
St. Vincent: 76%, 7.3
Pride: 92%, 7.9

As you can see, Into the Woods and St Vincent, while fairly well respected efforts, are clearly in over their heads. It's obvious that Guardians of the Galaxy (90%, 8.3) should have received one of those slots.

Also NOT nominated:
Interstellar: 72%, 8.9. You'd love to see it get a slot, but it doesn't seem to fit anywhere. Perhaps it should be there in lieu of Foxcatcher, but that's not as clear-cut as the cases for Guardians and Gone Girl.

And by the way:
Jennifer Aniston - best actress? I have not seen Cake, but color me at least a little skeptical.
