There are three new films in wide nationwide distribution:
The DUFF (2575 theaters, 62% positive reviews, rated PG-13). "Bianca (Mae Whitman) is a content high school senior whose world is shattered when she learns the student body knows her as 'The DUFF' (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) to her prettier, more popular friends"
McFarland, USA (2755 theaters, 77% positive reviews, rated PG). "The true against-all-odds story of the 1987 McFarland high school cross country team in an economically challenged community." From Disney.
Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (2880 theaters, 62% positive reviews, rated R). The critics hated it. Example: "Any way one spins it, this is a bad movie. It's cheap-looking. It's asinine. It's dull. It's thoroughly unsatisfying. And, at 93 minutes, the proceedings earn a whopping two laughs tucked inside a tidal wave of misery." The R rating is for "crude sexual content and language throughout, graphic nudity, drug use and some violence." Christine Quinn shows her breasts, if that floats your Baby Ruth in the Hot Tub.
Box office:
None of these films is likely to take the #1 spot away from 50 Shades. Neither are they expected to oust Kingsman or Sponge Bob from #2 and #3. Hot Tub Time Machine is likely to slide into 4th with a gross in the mid-teens. DUFF and McFarland are expected to battle American Sniper for the #5 slot, with all three films in the $10 million range.
