It's another bad week - unless you have kids (or are a stoner who loves Sponge Bob)
The PG-rated Sponge Bob Movie is the week's only bright spot, with 71% positive reviews. It'll be in 3600+ theaters.
Jupiter Ascending (PG-13) is the latest in the continuing saga of Wachowski failures (27% positive reviews). The general critical consensus is that the cast is strong and the film looks great, but half of the script is incoherent and anfractuous, and you'll wish the other half was as well, because it's boring and silly. One critic opined: "Just to get everything in, Jupiter Ascending frequently has to stop dead for a character to explain something to us that is both complicated and boring." It also has the worst possible indicator of a film's ineptitude. "What's that?" you wonder, "Failure to pre-screen for critics? Directed by Ewe Boll? A cameo from Jack Black?" No, worse than any of those things. It got a "fresh" tomato from The Village Voice. 3200 theaters.
Seventh Son is a PG-13 fantasy film which appears to be a complete misfire (6% positive reviews) despite Oscar winners (Julianne Moore and The Dude) in its leads. The Wrap wrote: "Seventh Son tells a story of dragons, witches, ghosts and ogres, but the most fantastic thing about it is the idea that someone thought this lumpy, bumpy and swollen sack of tired tropes and cluttered CGI would attract audiences." 2900 theaters.
Box office: it shapes up as a three-way battle for first place between American Sniper, Sponge Bob and Jupiter Ascending, which all seem to be headed for the $20M range.
Seventh Son may manage to pull $10M before word-of-mouth destroys it.
