NCAA College Basketball Tournament - round of 64, day 1

NCAA College Basketball Tournament - round of 64, day 1

Well, if your bracket is still intact, you're some kind of hoops savant, because two 14 seeds had won before your work day was over. ESPN's bracket contest has 11.5 million entries, and only 273 of them are still intact. If you are among those, kudos and envy from the other 99.998% of us.

#14 UAB (their nickname is the Blazers), coming into the game with a mediocre 19-15 record, knocked off the Iowa State Cyclones, who were rated ninth in the nation and were picked by many experts to go deep into the tournament. An hour later, #14 Georgia State upset Baylor.

#11 UCLA also advanced, thanks to an outrageous goaltending call. Many experts felt that UCLA should not have been invited to play in the tournament, but it now seems that they should make the Sweet Sixteen, since their next opponent is #14 UAB! There have been four previous 11-14 match-ups in the tournament, and the 14 seed has never come closer than 13 points in those contests.

In other news, Kentucky won, of course, and the Eastern Washington coach could not make good on his prediction that his #13th-seeded team would defeat Georgetown.
