It has been astounding to watch his progress. He averaged 1.8 PPG as a freshman. He averaged only 4.2 points and 1.8 boards as a soph. At that moment, you probably could have gotten about 1000-1 odds against him being the collegiate player of the year as a senior, but somewhere early in his junior year his game just came together. After scoring only two points in the opener that year, he improved in each of his next three, scoring 8, then 16, then 43. In that 43-point effort, he had no turnovers and was 16-for-19, including 6-for-6 on threes (pretty impressive long distance bombing for a man about seven feet tall). After that game it was suddenly obvious that he was a star with a wide array of talents. He never had another game quite like that one, but he lit it up in last year's NCAA, performing so brilliantly that Barkley was anointing him the best player in the tournament.
